Time out of school - Curse or Cure?

🌿 Time Out of School Isn’t a Curse, It’s a Cure 🌿

What do you think about this statement: “Time Out of School Isn’t a Curse, It’s a Cure”

So many parents worry that time out of school will “set their child back.” And this is also what most schools and day care will tell you - 'consistency is key' and 'attendance matters'.

Our school even gives us a chart that shows us the 'cumulative effect of days off school' and how it will 'effect their learning experience' - I absolutely do not agree with this.. and will write another article expressing why next week :)

But in my experience, these breaks (especially during the school term!) often become the healing moments our children most need.

My daughter and I have been travelling again recently. And while we’ve been away, she’s been learning in ways that school can’t always offer:

  • Learning how to make pizza

  • Working as part of a team

  • Sharing space with children of all ages

  • Making clear requests

  • Managing time naturally

  • Listening, cooperating, and creating connection

And perhaps most importantly, she’s been able to listen to her own body (something the system wants children to disconnect from by only being able to eat or drink when a bell rings, what?!) to eat when hungry, rest when tired, and move when she needs to.

And what I’ve noticed is each and every time we get to follow this natural rhythm, something incredible shifts.

The stomach aches disappear. The headaches fade. The defiance softens.

She can then return to her natural state of being which is loving, connected, cooperative, and full of life.

This is what happens when children’s basic needs for safety, connection, rest, play, and release of stress and trauma are met - this is the very foundation of Aware Parenting.

Yes, there have been big feelings too (and I love those moments) and I’ve had the time and spaciousness to sit and listen with full willingness*.

We’ve also played, slid down waterslides, swum, laughed, and made memories that remind me that Life itself is the greatest “school.”

School can teach children to regurgitate facts, but life teaches powerful meaning and evolution.

And for many children, time away from school isn’t a loss, it’s a restoration.
